On the border between Andalusia and Extremadura, 20 kilometers from Guadalcanal and La Capitana, the highest point of the Sierra Morena de Sevilla, is located San Nicolás del Puerto and the Waterfalls huéznar, one of the jewels of the province.
Reaching this Natural Monument (it has had a distinguished trail since 2001) will only take you a little more than an hour. 100 kilometers separate the source of this river from the Andalusian capital and it is a powerful haven of peace for those who enjoy refreshing plans beyond the beach.
Its source is located in the same town, in the “El Venero” spot. San Nicolás has a population of only 600 inhabitants, although in summer it is full of visitors eager for recreational bathing in its attractive inland beach. An environment surrounded by pasture, oaks, cork oaks, ash trees, willows, elms and alders in gallery forests and trails which are always in contact with the Huéznar River.
The route of the Huéznar waterfalls and how to get there
Along the course of the river, the hiker will be surprised by idyllic waterfalls and pools surrounded by an orchard that splashes with nuances this simple route .
The Huéznar waterfalls are 2 kilometers from the village and can be reached by car or by following this trail. It is a 7-kilometer circular route that takes about three and a half hours.
In this context, the following emerge natural pools and waterfalls, formed by “travertines” or limestone tuffs that arise from the calcic composition of the water. Thus, there are small slides and rocky jumps that attract hundreds of visitors every year.
However, bathing is not allowed. To take a dip in this village in the Sierra Morena Seville must stay in the artificial beach of San Nicolas.
Those who prefer the car should leave it in the recreational area “El Martinete” and take a road of about 600 meters to reach these formations.
Other trails in the vicinity
The Sierra Norte de Sevilla includes a rich catalog of trails beyond the one that leads to the Huéznar waterfalls. The Vía Verde de la Sierra Norte is an old railroad route that brings together in 20 kilometers a good amount of picturesque scenery. It communicates Cazalla and Constantina and with Cerro del Hierro and doing it is one of the autumn plans par excellence.
Other routes to consider are:
- The Dehesas road, which extends 13 kilometers practically flat and also starts in San Nicolás del Puerto.
- The Solana del Calvario trail, just 2 kilometers from the source of the river, ends at the artificial beach.
- From San Nicolás, reaching the Cerro del Hierro Natural Monument will take you 6.5 km of high difficulty although it is one of the most amazing landscapes in the province of Seville.
- For its part, the Route of the Hermitages runs through the one of San Diego (San Nicolás) and those of San Juan, Las Angustias and Jesús Nazareno (Alanís). In this case it is condensed in 14.2 km.
