The autumn getaways par excellence take place in October, consecrated month of “berreas”, musts, “montanera” and deciduous landscapes. There is no need to rush to the rural areas, only kilometers to immerse yourself in the customs, manifested in traditions such as the ‘Tostón Popular’ of Ojen, the ultimate celebration around the chestnuts.
The province of Malaga hoists this fruit every season and this year, the town of Ojen celebrates the XXXI edition of its iconic celebration.
The excursion is a big one, that’s for sure. Malaga and Ojen are barely separated by 40 minutes by car but from Seville must be delivered to 2 hours long incited by the love of chestnuts.
Thus, it seems an ideal getaway if you also drop by the Coto de las Canteras, visit Estepa (which just started its season of mantecaos and polvorones) or Setenil de las Bodegas on the way to final destination.
Aguardiante, bacon, chestnuts and popular games
As tradition dictates, the day of the ‘Tostón Popular’ of Ojen begins early. Neighbors of the locality are busy roasting chestnuts, which they arrange in their cartridges and harmonize with brandy, bacon and pitanzas.
Ojen is not the only town that dedicates such a characteristic celebration around chestnuts. It is, however, one of the most celebrated. Specifically, it takes place on the first Sunday after All Saints; this 2025 will coincide with November 2.
A big bonfire, chestnuts and raisins, local liquors, popular games and other victuals typical of the season and the province of Malaga.
