The former Cartuja Monastery is trading its role as a museum for a dance floor this weekend. The Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art (CAAC) will host the second edition of the NXT Festival on October 2 and 3 , a sort of dialogue between techno, the digital realm, and new technologies.
The event kicks off the fall music season in Seville with two sessions starting at sunset on the venue’s lawn.
This year, the festival is being held in partnership with REBELS, the traveling electronic music festival that frequently brings together the Andalusian raver community. Day passes for both days are still available for purchase on the official website.
Lineup for this Friday: minimal and melodic techno
This Friday, the music will play from 7:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. with a lineup headlined by two names from the international scene: Germany’s Paul Kalkbrenner and the U.S.’s Maceo Plex.
Kalkbrenner is one of the leading figures in the Berlin techno scene that emerged after the fall of the Wall. With a career spanning more than two decades, he has developed a melodic, analog sound with a distinctly cinematic quality.

He rose to international fame with “Sky & Sand,” the title track of the film *Berlin Calling* (2008), in which he also starred. He has released nine studio albums, and last year he released *The Essence*, his first LP in seven years.
Maceo Plex, born in Miami in 1978, blends techno, house, electro, and funk into soundscapes that have earned him critical acclaim.
What will be playing on Saturday at the CAAC?
On Saturday, from 6:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., the headliner is Italian DJ Marco Faraone, head of the Uncage label and creator of “Like That,” one of the summer’s biggest hits at Ibiza parties. He’ll be joined by French DJ Technasia, a veteran of the genre, and Spanish-Chilean DJ Viviana Casanova.
The organizers have also released a limited number of free invitations for Saturday’s event, which can be obtained through the festival’s website.
The full lineup also includes Cristina Tosio, Dhuna, and Jade Tansa.
A monastery with three lives

Since 1997, the CAAC has been housed in the former Monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas on Isla de la Cartuja.
The building was first a monastery and later the Pickman pottery factory; it was renovated for Expo ’92. In addition to exhibitions, the center organizes educational activities, workshops, seminars, and summer film screenings. This weekend, it’s adding an electronic music event to that list.
