Fall is beginning to unveil some of its time-honored events. From the Antique Book Fair to the Flamenco Biennial —where the Lope de Vega Theater makes its debut—to the Fado Festival, which is holding a new edition in Seville from October 23 to 25.
That lament of nostalgia, old streets, and saudade —declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO—will once again resonate in Seville during this major cultural event.
On this occasion, the central theme will be “Fado and the Neighborhoods, ” paying tribute to the Lisbon neighborhoods—Alfama, Mouraria, Bairro Alto—where this popular music was born.
The legendary Lope de Vega Theater (following its reopening for the Biennial) and the Consulate General of Portugal in Seville will serve as the official venues for a program packed with great voices, film, lectures, and art.
Sara Correia and Beatriz Felício: the queens of fado at the Lope de Vega
The festival’s highlight will take place on the stage of the Lope de Vega Theater with two must-see musical performances:
- Sara Correia: October 24 at 8:00 p.m. One of the undisputed leading figures of contemporary fado. With a Latin Grammy nomination and three critically acclaimed albums, Correia arrives in Seville to demonstrate why her volcanic voice honors tradition while also opening it up to new horizons.
- Beatriz Felício: October 25 at 7:00 p.m. The artist embodies the present and the bright future of Portuguese song. After releasing her debut album in 2024, the young artist will bring Seville a perfect blend of freshness, sensitivity, and the passion of the old-school fado tradition.
Movies, lectures, and a free exhibition
In any case, the festival goes far beyond the songs. To understand how the urban environment shaped Lisbon’s identity, the program is rounded out with several parallel activities:
- Exhibition “Fado and the Neighborhoods” ( October 1–28). Located at the Consulate General of Portugal, this exhibition—curated by the Fado Museum— uses photographs and historical documents to trace how music was experienced in everyday life in old Lisbon.
- A lecture by the renowned fado singer and educator Rodrigo Costa Félix on October 23 at 6:00 p.m. At the Portuguese Consulate, he will analyze the vital role of historic neighborhoods as drivers of musical creation.
- Screening of the documentary *Do Bairro* on October 23 at 7:00 p.m. This acclaimed film by director Diogo Varela Silva, a winner at the Doclisboa festival, offers an intimate journey through the human heart and the living traditions of Lisbon’s historic center.
