The city of Seville, in its eagerness to promote flamenco, will host a musical cycle with more than 30 free recitals. Mayor José Luis Sanz, presented this new initiative, ‘EmPEÑAdos por Sevilla’, which has the collaboration of the Union of Flamenco Peñas.
In the words of Sanz it is “a project that reflects Seville’s commitment to flamenco, one of our deepest and most universal signs of identity.” The programming of this event will take place throughout the year, between the months of February and June.
And it is not only a musical cycle, “but a firm commitment to give visibility and support to our flamenco artists, especially in such an authentic setting as the Peñas Flamencas, which have been and remain the soul of this art.”
Participating Flamenco Peñas
Within the framework ‘Promotion of Flamenco’ carried out by the consistory, it will be held in 13 spaces devoted to flamenco in the city.
Namely: Torres Macarena, La Plazuela, La Poleá, Asarvahás, El Carbonerillo, Calixto Sánchez, Jumoza, Cantes al Aire, Aires Flamencos, La Fragua, La Toná, Cerro del Águila and El Chozas.
In turn, this ambitious event aims to pay tribute to the work of the peñas and the talent “of those who make flamenco a unique and universal expression”.
The free nature of ‘EmPEÑAdos por Sevilla’ highlights the accessibility of flamenco culture as a way to democratize this genre that is rooted in Andalusia.
The Unión de Peñas Flamencas has as its purpose the study, cultivation, development, promotion and dissemination of flamenco art understood as a fundamental pillar of the culture and idiosyncrasy of Andalusia, the defense and prestige of flamenco art. In addition to its conservation, promotion, dissemination and enrichment of their artistic and cultural values.
