Seville, a hub where a multitude of musical genres converge, will finally see a major opera event next autumn. The first Opera Biennial in the city will alternate with the already consecrated flamenco event.
This was announced by the Mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, at an event in Madrid prior to the start of Fitur. Specifically, the event will take place between September 25 and October 12, 2025 and will pay tribute to the 150th anniversary of Carmen and the 250th anniversary of the birth of Manuel García.
The city of Seville, an operatic destination par excellence where more than 150 works have been performed, continues to position itself as one of the epicenters of opera. This biennial festival will alternate with the flamenco festival, guaranteeing the city great musical experiences every year.
The first edition of this initiative, “Seville City of Opera”, aims to consolidate the city as “a city that breathes culture 365 days a year”.
What activities are expected during the biennial “Seville City of Opera”?
Specifically, the festival will bring together performances, opera routes, exclusive events and, in short, experiences that merge art and history. And for this, it will have spaces such as the Real Alcázar, the Teatro de la Maestranza, the Palacio de las Dueñas, the Hospital de la Caridad or the Casa de Salinas.
In the words of Sanz, “a declaration of love to our history, our heritage […] Seville will be a stage that will thrill the world”.
The Maestranza will host some of the key events of this event, which Sevillians will be able to enjoy in the coming months. A good example is Manuel García’s I Tre Gobbi, a recital that will be harmonized by tenor Isamel Jordi; Donizetti’s María Padilla in concert or the opera Carmen.
In addition, Puccini’s Suor Angelica will premiere in February as the first production of the International Opera Academy, based at the Artillery Factory.
“With Seville City of Opera we take another step forward in our strategy to position ourselves as an international cultural reference and a premium tourist destination. This project is an engine that drives our city towards a vibrant, diverse and full of opportunities future, consolidating our place among the great cultural capitals of Europe,” stressed Sanz.
