Last August, and in the context of the energy crisis caused by Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, a Royal Decree on energy saving was approved, which in the case of Spain has led to a voluntary reduction of gas consumption by 7%.One of the measures that has been implemented in line with this text has been that commercial shop windows and unoccupied public buildings in Spain turn off their lights from 22h.
Limiting the Christmas lighting period
At the end of June the City Council confirmed that the lighting would take place in Seville on November 25 with a tender budget amounting to 1.2 million euros. However, with the atmosphere motivated by the energy crisis and Christmas on the horizon, the Board proposes to limit the period of Christmas lighting.
Specifically, it will do so in the framework of a draft decree to regulate protection against light pollution in Andalusia. In this case, the Christmas lights would not be turned on before December 8, so the Christmas illumination could arrive in Seville a month later. That is, only if the Consistory follows the proposal of the Ministry of Sustainability to limit the traditional lighting of these dates. In principle, the lighting would occur this 2022 on the 25th of next month at 288 streets and squares.
In this context, the question of what will happen with the Christmas lights in Seville this year is still up in the air. On it the Board, which argues that it will not apply “any measure of prohibition” and that will be the municipalities who have “the last word” in relation to the limitations that can be carried out in each city. In any case, the idea is to adjust the days of Christmas lighting to those of Christmas, thus reducing the days of ignition “between December 22 and January 6″.
