Lovers of history, fine dining, and getaways to charming villages near Seville are in for a treat. From today, June 13, through Sunday, Marchena celebrates its highly anticipated Roman Festival, a journey back in time more than two millennia to mark this annual event.
And the fact is, beyond beaches and swimming pools, the province still has plenty to offer: the Martia Romanorum MMXXVI is one of them.
The epicenter of the journey through time: from Alvarado to the Arco de la Rosa
In Marchena, you can truly feel the history; the festival unfolds right in the heart of the historic district, centered around Plaza de Alvarado and the majestic Arco de la Rosa.
Although the festival celebrates the Roman past, the setting is framed by one of the best-preserved medieval gates in the province.
This Mudejar brick arch, which was part of the ancient defensive wall, will serve as the centerpiece for the historical reenactments; children’s mini-chariot races; tastings of mulsum, the wine spiced with honey; and cultural activities for all ages.
The event takes place from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
What to Eat and See in Marchena
Going to Marchena and not enjoying its cuisine is almost a “deadly” sin. Since you’ll be enjoying the Roman encampments and parades, take the opportunity to get lost in its historic district—home to 18,000 residents—and go on a tapas tour.
Don’t leave without trying the traditional country stews, the famous olives, and, of course, the town’s sweet treasure: the legendary leaf-wrapped cakes made by the nuns of the Convent of San Andrés.
