The Teatro de la Maestranza is a national opera institution and one of the cultural complexes of reference in Andalusia. A rich annual program that includes dance, symphonic concerts, recitals and opera that could not resist celebrating this 2024 one of the great treasures of opera, Turandot.
The uniqueness of opera lies in its masterful integration of literature, theater and a highly complex musical fabric. In addition, coordination and technique are indispensable in each production: scenery, lighting, costumes and makeup.
The result is a valuable cultural product that continues to excite and will attract more than 12,6000 spectators to the Sevillian theater. In light of the centenary of Puccini’s death, the Maestranza will offer the opportunity to enjoy Turandot with seven performances and two casts.
This is an in-house production, acquired from the Teatro La Fenice in Venice where it premiered in 1987, with scenery and costumes by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle.
The musical direction will be in charge of Gianluca Marcianò and Jacopo Brusa and Emilio Lopez does the same in terms of the scene, on the design of Joan Sullivan.
This sumptuous staging will include the Coro Teatro de la Maestranza and the Escolanía de Los Palacios, under the baton of Íñigo Sampil and Enrique Cabello, respectively.
What days will Turandot be performed at the Maestranza?
After more than a decade without passing through the Seville stage (it was performed in 1998 and 2010), the premiere in question will take place on November 7. In addition to the preview on November 5 dedicated to children under 30, and whose tickets are already sold out, there are performances scheduled for November 7, 10, 12, 13, 14 and 16.
The play tells the story of Turandot, a Chinese princess who decides to marry the man who can solve her three riddles. Although Calaf succeeds, the implacable Turandot rejects him anyway. In light of her refusal, Calaf sets her one last riddle: if she guesses his name before dawn, she will die; otherwise, they must marry.
