There are many events that once drew only a handful of loyal attendees but now attract an enthusiastic crowd. This is evident, for example, in the iconic parade commemorating Diego Velázquez, organized by the Tercio de Olivares Association and the Sevillian Painter’s Birthplace Foundation, in collaboration with the Medinaceli Foundation.
Turning the corner and coming face-to-face with a 17th-century soldier—or, in fact, watching the entire spectacle from the very beginning—will once again be possible on June 19. The Tercio de Olivares will polish their pikes, arquebuses, and period costumes to celebrate the 427th birthday of our world-renowned painter: Diego Velázquez.
Fifty historical reenactors will form an impressive procession that promises to create postcard-worthy scenes in Seville’s most iconic spots. We’ll tell you everything about the route, the schedule, and the highlight you won’t want to miss.
A journey to the Golden Age right in the heart of Seville
For the eighth consecutive year, this tribute (supported by the City Council and the Casa Ducal Medinaceli Foundation) will fill the old town with living history. This isn’t just any parade: it’s a meticulously detailed reenactment where the costumes, swords, and atmosphere will transport you right into the heart of the Golden Age.
Furthermore, the event isn’t limited to just the march; it will feature a spectacular soundtrack. Soprano Irene Román and guitarist Paula Brieba will perform pieces of popular Baroque music from the first half of the 17th century to round out the experience.
The itinerary: key stops and the reenactment of “Las Lanzas”
The parade will begin at 8:00 p.m. and continue until 10:00 p.m., making strategic stops at locations linked to the life of the Sevillian genius:
- The procession will begin at 8:00 p.m. at Casa Pilatos, a key location for recalling the connection between Velázquez and his teacher Francisco Pacheco with the Duke of Alcalá.
- From the palace complex, this procession will make its way to the Plaza del Salvador and the Plaza del Duque, where it will make stops at both locations.
- In 2026, the Las Setas staircase will host one of the day’s highlights. The Tercio will perform a live reenactment of “The Surrender of Breda” (the painting “The Lances”), one of Velázquez’s most famous works. The event will be directed by Antero Pascual Rodríguez, pastor of the Church of San Pedro (where the painter was baptized in 1599).
- Around 10:00 p.m., the procession will conclude at the Casa de Pilatos.
