The City Council of Malaga yesterday revoked the 25 horse-drawn carriage licenses that remained in force and since then both vehicles are not allowed in the city. The measure has of course aroused controversy as it is, still in 2025, part of the conceptual map of many Andalusian cities.
This was communicated by the mayor of the city, Francisco de la Torre, in a video posted on the Instagram profile of the consistory, where he stressed that this is a decision “thinking about the welfare and safety of animals“.
The debate on horse-drawn carriages in Seville
In light of this decision, which they already put on the table last January, it is worth asking whether it is feasible that this casuistry applied in a city like Seville, where horses are also a matter of debate.
The case in Seville, from the consistory contemplate making changes to the current ordinance, which in the future will include the basis of the Animal Welfare Act.
In light of the events in Malaga, Podemos Sevilla asks the municipal government to establish a “public and transparent” debate on horse-drawn carriages in the city in order to know what the public thinks.
Meanwhile, in Malaga the holders have already been paid with compensation, amounting to 125,380.48 €.
