The Velá Santa Ana blooms in the vicinity of the month of July in Triana as a breath of fresh air between the tedious temperatures. This neighborhood of Seville opens to the public with one of its biggest celebrations, a party that lasts for a week and aims to immortalize the afternoons and evenings with sports tournaments and memorable performances along the Guadalquivir.
Of all the activities that dispenses this major event in Triana, one of its most popular proposals of the Velá is the game of cucaña . This monumental trunk awaits the intrepid spirits and brings together a few others, who make the pilgrimage to the riverbank so as not to miss any of the action.
This practice, which nowadays has a prize (30 euros for the winners), has its origins in the early twentieth century and the rules are as follows.
Cucaña de la Velá de Santa Ana: when is it celebrated?
The premise of the cucaña of Triana is quite simple. Those who entrust themselves to this task must cross the trunk, arranged on a boat and smeared with bait, until they reach the flag located at the other end of the wood.
In other words, the participants will have to manage to catch the flag and not fall into the river.
From the cucaña, the more they scamper and suddenly emerge from the river to make way for the next daredevil or daring. For this edition of the Velá, the cucaña will be held on six evening days, July 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26.
Specifically, the cucaña will take place on the days in question at 6:30 p.m., where those interested will have to come and get in line to face this aquatic challenge.
