The Velá Santa Ana blossoms in early July in Triana like a breath of fresh air amid the sweltering heat. This neighborhood of Seville opens its doors to the public with one of its biggest celebrations—a week-long festival that aims to make the afternoons and evenings unforgettable with sports tournaments and memorable performances along the Guadalquivir River.
Of all the activities offered by this major event in Triana, one of the Velá’s most popular attractions is the cucaña game. This monumental log awaits the intrepid and draws crowds of others who make their way to the riverbank so as not to miss a single moment of the action.
This tradition, which nowadays offers a prize (winners take home 30 euros), dates back to the early 20th century, and the rules are as follows.
What is the Triana cucaña all about?
The premise of Triana’scucaña is quite simple, though actually doing it is another story. Those who take on this challenge must climb across the log, which is positioned horizontally on the bow of a boat.
The log is smeared with grease, all the way up to the flag at the other end. Clearly, taking two steps in a row without being flung into the water is nothing short of a heroic feat.
The ultimate goal is to slide down skillfully until reaching the flag at the other end of the log. In other words: participants will have to figure out how to grab the prize without falling into the river in the process. Slips and falls happen one after another, and after a splash, the participant emerges from the water to make way for the next daredevil.
Dates and times for the cucaña
The most daring participants slip down the cucaña and suddenly emerge from the river to make way for the next daredevil. For this edition of the Velá, the cucaña will take place over six evenings: July 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26, 2026.
The events will kick off each afternoon at 6:30 p.m., when the heat begins to let up and the atmosphere along the banks of the Guadalquivir becomes unbeatable.

Those interested in participating in the cucaña in 2026 should go to the district headquarters, located at 33 San Jacinto Street, to sign up for this activity.
Mandatory requirements: To board the boat, you must be at least 18 years old, present your ID at the time of registration, and—for obvious safety reasons— be able to swim proficiently.
Those who sign up for this activity can board the boat in question every afternoon. As for the prize, last year at least €30 was awarded to those who succeeded.
