Specifically, they add 138 beaches, marinas and sustainable boats after incorporating 8 new sandy areas. Only Valencia, with 143 blue flag beaches, is ahead of Andalusia.
An international award
This is a recognition of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in collaboration with the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac).
Its International Blue Flag Jury is in charge of evaluating each year the quality of the coastline of 45 countries to grant this award, which enjoys international prestige. It should be noted that it is the municipalities themselves that voluntarily present the candidacy of their beaches.
For their evaluation, they mainly take into account environmental management, but also the provision of services, the availability of information, environmental education, facilities and the safety of bathing areas.
As far as water is concerned, its quality must be accredited with the ‘excellent’ label according to the parameters established in Directive 2006/7/EC.
This year’s list includes 749 blue flags throughout Spain. The distinctive has been awarded to 642 beaches, 101 marinas and 6 sustainable tourist boats. All of these can be consulted on the official website, where the complete list can be found.
