A significant number of young Spaniards continue to postpone moving out of their parents’ homes, among other reasons, due to skyrocketing rental prices. The Spanish Youth Council maintains that “7 out of 10 young people working in Spain continue to live with their parents.” Given this scenario, the government has decided to make a strategic move: from 2026, the Minimum Living Income (IMV) will be available to those over 23 who continue to live in the family home, with assistance of up to €733.9 per month.
However, in order to benefit from this assistance, they must meet the new requirements of economic independence and cohabitation. This reform allows these citizens to access the IMV as individual beneficiaries. In other words, they must not belong to the same family unit of economic cohabitation.
Requirements for receiving the €733
As noted, one of the most substantial changes in the current reform is that citizens over the age of 23 can now prove that they maintain a separate economic unit even if they live in the same family home. In other words, sharing a zip code will not prevent them from sharing income or expenses on a structural basis.
Likewise, young people between the ages of 23 and 29 must prove that they have lived independently for at least two years prior to the application, either with rental contracts or periods of registration with Social Security.

Those over 30, however, will only have to prove one year of prior independence. In any case, they are exempt from this requirement if the cessation of cohabitation with their parents was due to the death of the latter.
The reform also covers special cases of young people in the care of the government, victims of gender-based violence, trafficking, sexual exploitation, homelessness, or other situations of particular vulnerability.
On the other hand, the applicant must be in a situation of economic vulnerability —with an income below the guaranteed minimum income—and among the civil requirements, it is essential that they are not married.
