The month of November brings two major events to Seville: the traditional Christmas tree lighting at the end of the month, and multiple performances of *Don Juan Tenorio* starting at the beginning of the month. The church at the San Luis de los Franceses Monumental Complex will once again serve as the venue for José Zorrilla’s *Don Juan Tenorio*, presented by the Seville Classical Theater Company.
Tickets go on sale today, Thursday, October 22, starting at 11:00 a.m. on entradas.com. Although the standard price is 5 euros, discounts are available.
Dates and Times
There will be nine performances: on October 28, 29, 30, and 31, and November 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7, around All Saints’ Day, when this play is traditionally performed.
All performances are one-time shows. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the performance begins at 8:00 p.m. and lasts approximately 120 minutes.
That said, it’s best to arrive early. Once the performance begins, no one will be allowed into the venue.
A Sevillian classic in a Baroque temple
Zorrilla premiered the play in 1844 and sets the action in Seville in 1545, between Carnival and All Souls’ Day.
Love, death, the defiance of moral norms, and the search for redemption revolve around an arrogant seducer who lives oblivious to the consequences of his actions. His rivalry with Don Luis Mejías and his relationship with Doña Inés de Ulloa lead him to confront his own destiny.
The church provides a monumental Baroque setting, rich ornamentation, and minimal distance between the performers and the audience. Director Juan Motilla highlights this closeness as something “very special.” Motilla directs the production and, together with Antonio Campos, adapted the play. For the company, the title holds special significance: it was with this play that they began their professional career in 2005.
José María del Castillo plays Don Juan Tenorio and Silvia Beaterio plays Doña Inés de Ulloa. Rounding out the cast are Íñigo Núñez (Don Gonzalo de Ulloa), Luis Alberto Domínguez (Don Luis Mejías), José Chaves (Don Diego Tenorio and the sculptor), Guillermo Jiménez (Ciutti), Gina Escánez (Buttarelli, Lucía, and the abbess), Manuela Reina (Brígida), Santi Rivera (Captain Centellas), and Nacho Bravo (Don Rafael de Avellaneda).
The initiative is sponsored by the Department of Culture and Citizenship of the Seville Provincial Council, as part of its program at the historic complex.
Casimiro Fernández, the provincial deputy for Culture and Citizenship, states:
