The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced an unusual measure in terms of public transport: a single monthly pass that includes Metro, Cercanías, Media Distancia and state buses for 60 €. The measure, which will come into force in the second half of January, will allow young people under 26 years of age to travel for only €30 per month on any of these means of transport.
The measure follows the path of sustainable mobility and adds to the revalidation of existing discounts on public transport for 2026.
A flat rate, the single season ticket, which will enable travel between communities even if it does not include the AVE or the Long Distance.
An approximation to the German model
In the words of the President himself, “it means savings for the pockets of many families; and, therefore, it is a transforming and very relevant measure”.
The measure aims to promote collective transport while waiting for the regional and municipal networks to adhere to it with their own tickets. A model that would be similar to the Deutschlandticket. The German example includes all public transport in the country, including metros and streetcars, except high-speed trains, for €63 per month.
In any case, the pass will be approved by royal decree law during the last Council of Ministers.
Transport subsidies are maintained
With regard to transport subsidies, those in force are extended: the subsidies on season tickets and multi-journey tickets as well as the 40% discounts on Media Distancia trains, 50% on Avant and 50% on state buses. Young people under 26, however, will still have 70% discounts on MD and buses.
