In light of the Animal Welfare Law that Spain passed in 2023, reforms and new regulations have proliferated in different autonomous communities. Andalusia is no exception, and the regional government has incorporated pet welfare into its 2026 Budget Law (Law 8/2025), published in the BOJA.
This is one of the first regional tax policies in Spain specifically designed for furry friends and other pets. Specifically, it translates into an income tax deduction for veterinary expenses, in effect since January 1.
How to benefit from this deduction of up to €100
In other words, it is now possible to deduct 30% of veterinary expenses up to a maximum of €100 per taxpayer on your income tax return.
The rule states that these must be “veterinary expenses arising from the acquisition or ownership” of the animal in question. Namely: vaccinations, deworming, sterilization, mandatory veterinary treatments, and basic healthcare.
In all cases, these expenses must be justified with an invoice from an authorized veterinarian.
How long does this tax benefit last?
The duration of this tax benefit varies depending on how the animal came to your family, with particular rewards for adoption from shelters.
- Purchased or adopted animals (general): you can only apply the deduction during the first year.
- Animals adopted from shelters: the benefit extends for 3 years.
- In the case of assistance dogs, the deduction can be applied throughout the animal’s life.
With this measure, the Regional Government of Andalusia aims to promote veterinary care, responsible adoption, and improve animal welfare.
