Seville in April is synonymous with fairs, ruffles, flowers and polka dots. We know that. But we are also aware that Seville at this time of the year is much more than that. The city of the special color has so many plans when spring arrives that it is difficult to choose just one.
Strolling through the “casetas” in a flamenco dress or protecting yourself from the sun with a good wide-brimmed hat is worth (and very much), but we also understand that you want to escape from the crowds and the rebujito for a while and make alternative plans to the Seville Fair. These are our favorites!
1. Sightseeing in your own city
It’s funny but there are times when, even living in a city for years, there are spaces, monuments or buildings that we don’t know. Seville, luckily, has many places of interest that are worth visiting and learning about its history.
In these days when most Sevillians and tourists are strolling through the fairgrounds, it is not a bad idea to take the opportunity to visit some of the most significant buildings of the Andalusian capital without queuing up and get a picture without any head. It is worthwhile to enter typical monuments such as the Giralda, the Torre del Oro or the Real Alcazar but also to discover other more unknown sites such as the Monastery of San Jeronimo, the Plaza del Cabildo or the Palacio de Dueñas.
2. Take advantage of Book Day to treat yourself to a book.
Since the April Fair coincides with the Day of the Book, perhaps the best thing to do is to take advantage of the weekend to celebrate April 23 with a new book in your hands. The offer of bookstores in Seville is immense and many of them have launched special offers for this important date. Stop by the one closest to you and get a good copy!
3. Sailing on the Guadalquivir River
Now that the good weather has arrived, maybe a (very) good plan is to approach the banks of the Guadalquivir and enjoy the many plans it offers. Maybe taking a dip is a bit risky but you can try a boat or canoe ride on its waters. Breeze, sport and good views, what more could you ask for?
4. Go to a concert by candlelight
In addition to sevillanas and flamenco versions of pop and reggaeton songs by Raya Real, these weeks in Seville you can enjoy live music concerts by candlelight. A great plan that comes from the hand of Candlelight and that brings the best movie soundtracks and the most acclaimed classical compositions to unique spaces in the city as the Casa Salinas or the Aquarium of Seville.
On April 21, Candlelight will pay tribute to the works of Hans Zimmer in a concert that will bring together some of the most iconic themes in the history of cinema. From Pearl Harbor to Pirates of the Caribbean. A week later, on April 30 , a professional dancer and a string quintet will perform a delicate and minimalist version of The Nutcracker. Two alternative plans to the Seville Fair that you won’t want to miss.
5. Enjoy the spring and its almond trees in bloom.
With the arrival of spring, also comes the flowering of the cherry and almond trees of our beloved Andalusia. A phenomenon that leaves pictures of the most bucolic and well worth discovering. In the vicinity of Seville there are many places where you can enjoy these landscapes with white and pink tones. These are some of the fields where you can go if you want to escape from so many fairs and disconnect for a while.
