Every August 15, Seville observes one of its oldest summer traditions: the procession of the Virgin of the Kings, patron saint of the city and the archdiocese. It’s an event that calls for an early start, whether to attend the early morning Masses or to follow the procession through the historic center. Here’s a rundown of the schedule, route, and tips to make sure you don’t miss a thing.
Schedule and Route of the Virgen de los Reyes Procession
The Virgin of the Kings will make her customary procession around the Holy Cathedral. As is customary, the float will set out after the traditional three pauses.
- At 5:30 a.m., 6:00 a.m., and 6:30 a.m., pilgrim Masses will be held at the Jubilee Altar.
- 8:00 a.m.: The procession departs through the Puerta de los Palos.
- As for the route, it will pass through Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, Cardenal Carlos Amigo Vallejo Street, Alemanes Street, Avenida de la Constitución, Fray Ceferino González Street, Plaza del Triunfo, and Plaza Virgen de los Reyes.
- The float is expected to enter through the Puerta de los Palos around 9:30 a.m.
- Finally, at 9:30 a.m., the Seasonal Mass will take place at the High Altar, presided over by the Archbishop.
Tips for Attending the Procession
- Get up early to secure a spot. Although the Virgin departs at 8:00 a.m., the main streets (such as Avenida de la Constitución and Plaza del Triunfo) fill up long before dawn breaks.
- Temperatures and what to wear: Despite the early start, the August heat in Seville is already noticeable by then. Bring water, a fan, and light clothing.
- Symbols and Significance: This year’s event has special significance, as it marks the 80th anniversary of the official proclamation of the Virgin of the Kings as the city’s patron saint by Pope Pius XII in 1946.
