Thousands of bathers arrive at the Andalusian coast every summer with the promise of endless sandy beaches wearing umbrellas and blue coolers. Huelva is the destination of most of these visitors, attracted by its extensive unspoiled beaches. Matalascañas, although crowded and lively, accuses year after year a significant loss of sand.
In recent weeks especially metal structures and rocky areas and stones have been exposed to bathers in addition to a significant lack of sand.
Beyond being left without shore, it is a danger for users who drop by its beaches that has again caused a stir in social networks.
The sand issue is nothing new.
In 2024, in light of this situation, the City Council of Almonte banned access to some bathing areas, really dangerous when the tide rises.
In this regard, the Ministry of Ecological Transition has made available the contracts comprising the contribution of sand and improvement of the retention devices of Matascañas beach. An investment of almost 5 million euros, which is not expected to be put into operation until September. As regards the execution period, it is estimated that the works will take four months.
The shortage of sand that has been evident in Matalascañas for more than 5 years responds to the progressive sinking of the breakwaters that were installed in 1978. The result: a small area of beach at high tide.
Therefore, the remodeling would bring a regrowth of the first 50 meters of each breakwater and 700,000 cubic meters of sand.
In TikTok proliferate since the last weeks videos showing situation and alerting potential bathers of the state of some of the affected beaches.
